Through the years, home ownership has been the dream of nearly every American and today’s times are certainly no exception. The housing market is booming across the country and is being fueled, in particular, by millennials (those in their late 20s and early 30s) purchasing their first home. As a real estate professional, you’re familiar with the gamut of emotions that home buyers experience throughout the home buying process…hope, elation, frustration…just to name a few. With first time buyers in the mix, low inventory, bidding wars and the normal snag-ups that inevitably occur when buying a house, the process can become overwhelming. And here’s a shocker: There’s going to be STRESS! Thankfully, there are a few things that you, as a real estate agent, can do to help ease the stress and anxiety for all involved:

Help Your Clients Manage Stress Through The Home Buying Process

Make A List

As a realtor, you know the process of buying a home but your clients may not. A great way to alleviate stress for you and your clients is to make a list and lay out a plan of what needs to be done. Give a copy to your clients and keep one for yourself. Having a plan in writing will help keep everyone on task and you can check things off together as they get done. The peace of mind that this one simple task brings is invaluable.

Keep Your Cool

While your client’s emotions might be all over the board, yours should not. Your job is to stay cool under pressure and keep your emotions in check no matter what’s happening with the other parties involved. You’re the expert representing your clients. They’re putting their trust in you to guide them through the ups and downs of home buying. Your level head will naturally help calm your clients.

Over Communicate

Assure your clients that feeling stress is perfectly natural. Afterall, buying a home is one of the biggest investments that most of us make in a lifetime. Over-communicate everything you can about the home buying process early on. Forewarn your buyers about things that could go wrong and how you’ll work through it. That way, when there’s a snag, no one should be shocked or upset.

Decide With Your Realtor What is Best for You

Be A Good Listener

Being a good listener is truly one of life’s most important communication skills. By listening intently to your client’s aspirations, worries, concerns, etc…you can likely pinpoint exactly what is stressing them out. Calmly communicate back to them what they conveyed to you in your own words. From there, you can help come up with a solution to help ease or eliminate whatever is bothering them.

The Big Picture

Do your best to keep your clients’ eye on the big picture. It’s not uncommon for buyers to get cold feet. Remind them of the value of real estate, how home equity is gained and how real estate increases in value. On the other hand, if a deal falls through and they don’t get the house that they want, assure them that it’s not the end of the world. At the end of the day, you’ll be there to help pick up the pieces and help them find another one.
